Behind the Curtain - Athena (ArtsWest)
This coming Thursday, Athena, a play written by Gracie Gardner and described as "a deadly serious comedy about ambition, success, and owning your superiority" opens at ArtsWest in West Seattle. We sat down to go Behind the Curtain with the director of the ArtsWest production, Kathryn Van Meter, to talk about staging the piece, which tells the story of two polar opposite teenage fencing competitors, each preparing for the national championships. We discuss the what it takes to bring fencing to the stage, how the actors have trained for the production, the challenges of producing a show like this in the unique ArtsWest theatre configuration, and so much more. There's a little something for everyone in this play, it's funny, it's dramatic, and hopefully it introduces more people to the wonderful world of fencing.
